Audi R8 carbon fibre hydro dipping is a great way to completely change the appearance of standard engine bay components while keeping the original parts underneath.
For this project, we refinished a set of Audi R8 V10 engine bay covers in a high-gloss carbon fibre effect at our workshop in Poole, Dorset.
The parts were carefully prepared before the carbon fibre pattern was applied using the hydro dipping process. They were then finished with a clear coat to protect the decorative finish and create the deep gloss shown in the finished photos.
Carbon Fibre Effect for Audi R8 Engine Bay Parts
The Audi R8 already has a distinctive engine bay, so the aim with this job was to give the original components a more individual appearance without replacing them with aftermarket carbon fibre parts.
Hydro dipping allows a carbon fibre pattern to be applied over complex shapes, curves and moulded details.
That made it particularly well suited to these Audi R8 engine covers, which feature a mixture of large panels, recessed areas and shaped edges.
Once complete, the carbon fibre effect follows the form of each component and gives the whole set a much more customised finish.

High-Gloss Carbon Fibre Hydro Dip Finish
After the hydro dipping stage, the components were clear coated to protect the finish and provide a smooth, high-gloss surface.
The clear coat also helps bring out the depth of the carbon fibre pattern, particularly across the larger engine covers where the weave is more visible.
On the centre section, the original V10 FSI detailing remains visible beneath the finished coating.
This keeps the original Audi styling while giving the component a completely different overall appearance.
Hydro Dipping Complex Automotive Parts
One of the main advantages of hydro dipping is the ability to apply decorative patterns to shapes that would be difficult to cover using conventional films or wraps.
These Audi R8 parts include curves, recesses, raised sections and narrow edges.
With the correct preparation and dipping process, the carbon fibre pattern can follow these shapes while keeping the original design of the part intact.
Hydro dipping can be used on a wide range of suitably sized automotive components, including:
- Engine covers
- Dashboard trim
- Centre console panels
- Door trim
- Interior mouldings
- Motorcycle parts
- Decorative exterior components
- Custom plastic and metal parts

Carbon Fibre Hydro Dipping for Automotive Parts
Carbon fibre remains one of the most popular patterns for automotive hydro dipping.
However, there are many other patterns and finishes available depending on the look required.
The base colour underneath the film can also affect the final appearance, while different clear coat finishes can be used to create anything from a more subtle effect through to a deep high-gloss finish.
Each project is assessed individually based on the material, condition, size and intended use of the parts.
